WINNIPEG – January 18, 2005 - Pharmacist Daren Jorgenson, pioneer of the mail-order pharmacy business in Canada recently launched www.Americaputmeoutofbusiness.com to challenge Americans to put him out of business the RIGHT way. The right way is by urging elected American officials to bring affordable prescription drug prices to American pharmacies and American consumers, and in doing so essentially eliminating the need for Canadian mail-order pharmacies.
Canadian mail order pharmacies are now a step closer to being shut down, but according to Jorgenson, the wrong way. Government officials in the United States and Canada have gone to great lengths to try and eradicate the Canadian online pharmacy business. The pharmaceutical companies however, have taken the greatest action. Merck Frosst, manufacturers of popular prescription drugs such as Fosamax, Zocor and the recently pulled Vioxx have just announced that they are going to cut off supply to all Canadian pharmacies and wholesalers dispensing to Americans. "This is just one more large powerful pharmaceutical company flexing their muscles in order to keep closed the American pharmacy market. It is a scary thing when a company can use economic reasoning to affect the health of Americans. We are now just one more step closer to being put out of business the WRONG way,” says Jorgenson.
Merck Frosst isn't the first drug manufacturer to discontinue supply to Canadian mail order pharmacies. Within the last year, other major drug companies, particularly Pfizer, have also been cutting off the supply of their medications to mail order pharmacies just because they are providing a safe and affordable alternative service to Americans. Pfizer's actions have forced Jorgenson to seek global solutions such as dispensing Pfizer medication from New Zealand and other countries. Now, Pfizer is restricting supply to pharmacies in New Zealand just like they did in Canada. The enormous profits of drug companies like Pfizer and Merck Frosst are threatened when Americans order their prescription medications from Canada at much more affordable prices. Even though only about one percent of prescription drugs consumed by Americans are purchased from Canada or other countries, the drug companies will do anything to protect their profits and control the American pharmaceutical market.
Jorgenson says, "I want America to put me out of business the RIGHT way, by bringing fair and reasonable drug pricing to local American pharmacies. If multinational drug companies like Merck Frosst and Pfizer succeed in shutting off supply to pharmacies that supply safe and affordable prescription medications to Americans from around the world, then America will lose a valuable safety valve for patients unable to afford their medication in the United States. If successful the actions of Merck and others will result in the death of Americans.”
