Is Legalizing the purchase of prescription drugs from Canada the Answer?

A CHALLENGE TO ALL AMERICANS FROM DAREN JORGENSON

www.americaputmeoutofbusiness.com

WINNIPEG – It was one year ago today that Pharmacist Daren Jorgenson, Founder of many online Canadian pharmacies, including www.canadameds.com, launched his new website, www.Americaputmeoutofbusiness.com challenging Americans to put him out of business ‘the right way'. Mr. Jorgenson, a pioneer of the mail-order pharmacy industry, challenged American citizens to shut down his very successful mail-order pharmacy business in Canada and around the world by urging their elected officials to bring affordable prescription prices to American pharmacies so that Americans are not paying more for their prescription medications than citizens of any other developed country in the world.

Daren Jorgenson never expected this industry to grow at the pace that is has. Jorgenson says, "This industry has experienced phenomenal growth and has now clearly defined more than ever before that there is a health care crisis in the United States. Millions of individuals are being forced to decide between the everyday essentials of life and their life saving prescription medications. Why do elected officials continue to turn their backs on the millions that are suffering? Why do elected officials continue to slam our industry by challenging the safety of prescription medications from Canada when they can just as easily challenge drug companies in the United States to lower their prices? Why has the pharmaceutical industry consistently been the most profitable industry over the past 8 years, with profits 4 to 5 times higher than the average Fortune 500 firms? Elected officials refuse to do anything about the millions in the United States that are suffering because they can not afford prescription medications and must be challenged by Americans for the well being of Americans.”

“This industry has raised awareness in the United States and it has exposed the one fact that drug companies were hoping Americans would not discover, that being that Americans pay more for their prescription medications than any other developed country in the entire world,” says Jorgenson.

Many drug companies, including Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Merck Frosst have and continue to restrict the sale of their prescription medications to pharmacies in Canada and around the world because they know that if the online pharmacy industry is allowed to flourish on a global scale, it will drastically affect their bottom line, this despite announcing record profits year in and year out.

During this past year Michael Moore announced that his next major project will be to expose the lying and deceit that these so called ‘ethical’ drug companies are feeding the American public. More recently, Pfizer Executive, Peter Rost, reaffirmed what we have been expressing for years by speaking out against the ridiculous prices that Americans are forced to pay when safe and affordable options clearly exist. According to a new AARP study released on August 16, 2005, the average increase in the price manufacturers charge for brand name prescription drugs widely used by older Americans continues to substantially exceed the rate of general inflation.

More than one-half of the drugs in the sample study (110 of 195), had increases in manufacturer price during the period from December 31, 2004 through March 31, 2005. As a result of this and increases in recent years, a typical older American (who takes three prescription drugs) is likely to have experienced an increase, on average, in the cost of therapy from the year 2000 through March 31, 2005 of $866.16. This assumes that the drugs are brand name products used to treat chronic conditions and that full price increases were passed along to the consumer.

Jorgenson is gearing up for a cross country tour of America to promote “America Put Me Out of Business,” and to provide Americans with the facts that drug companies in the Untied States do not want Americans to see. Jorgenson says, “So Americans – do it the right way. I want you to put me out of business by challenging your elected officials to bring affordable prescription prices to American pharmacies. Americans must not allow drug companies to continue dictating what they will pay for their prescription medications. I want America to put me out of business! We encourage a grass roots movement against the drug companies and we welcome all in the fight against Big Pharma.”

We encourage all American politicians, health care providers and citizens to express their views and concerns on costly drug prices in the United States and the issues that surround re-importation by fax to 1-204-947-9153 or by mail to 885 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB, Canada R2W 3P2 or email us at rbrar@canadameds.com.

Bill to allow pharmacies to reimport drugs passes Senate

The Oklahoma Senate backs a drug reimportation plan that would permit state pharmacies to obtain U-S-made prescription drugs from Canada and elsewhere for sale here. The Federal Drug Administration has opposed drug reimportation bills, claiming they violate the Interstate Commerce Clause of the U-S Constitution. Those measures mainly deal with allowing individuals to obtain reimported drugs. Tulsa state Senator Tom Adelson says his legislation avoids that legal question because it would require pharmacies to sell reimported medicines only to Oklahomans in intrastate, not interstate, commerce. Most programs are geared to allowing individuals obtain such drugs by crossing the border into Canada or buying drugs online.

Democrats allege bad deal on drugs

Bay Area seniors are not saving significant money under Medicare's new prescription drug program, according to a report released Monday by most of the Bay Area's House Democrats. The report says Bay Area prices for 2004's 10 best-selling prescription drugs among seniors are 75 percent higher under the new Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit than under deals negotiated by the federal government at other agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs. Medicare Part D's prices also are 60 percent higher than those paid by consumers in Canada; almost 5 percent higher than prices on Drugstore.com; and almost 2 percent higher than prices at Costco, the report found. But Republicans who shepherded the bill through Congress rejected a proposal to let Medicare negotiate with drug companies for lower prices. The report proves "what we've been saying since the debate on the Republican Medicare drug bill began," said Rep. Pete Stark, D-Fremont, in a news release. "If you create a privatized drug benefit and refuse to let the government negotiate lower prices, senior citizens and people with disabilities will pay the price," said Stark, who as ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee's Health Subcommittee is particularly outspoken on the issue. "Instead of attempting to set Medicare on the road to privatization, Republicans in Congress should have worked with Democrats to establish a real prescription benefit within Medicare."
