Two local lawmakers joined the chorus of voices calling for another cheaper option for prescription drugs.
Democratic Reps. John J. Gleason of Flushing and Lee Gonzales of Flint Township said they support joining I-SaveRx, an Illinois-based drug program that imports drugs from Canada and other countries. People could save up to 50 percent on prescriptions, they said during a press conference Monday at the Swartz Creek Senior Center.
House Democrats pitched the program statewide Monday.
President Bush opposes drug imports because of safety concerns.
Gleason said if Michigan can import Canada's trash it should also be able to import its prescriptions. And, he said, Republicans should be eager to see more competition in the marketplace.
Gonzales noted there are an estimated 1.8 million people in Michigan without prescription drug coverage.
Michigan already offers a prescription drug plan to seniors. The state buys common drugs in bulk and passes those savings on to residents in the program supported by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
