With soaring prescription drugs leaving many Oklahomans broke, a controversial plan could make some medications cheaper. Governor Brad Henry wants the state to allow Oklahomans to buy prescription drugs from Canada. The proposal was met with mixed opinions in Carter County today. KTEN's Pete Tenney talked with the governor's office and with locals about the proposal.
In pharmacies all over Ardmore, Most the response has been positive because prescription prices are so high. But there is some frustration tonight. Last year, Governor Henry made the same proposal and it was shot down in Oklahoma. Even though prescription drugs from Canada would be cheaper to buy, many Oklahomans wonder why they can't just get affordable medications at home. Some who've lived on both sides of the border say dealing with Canada is best for Oklahoma.
"We had to purchase some of my husband's medications here when he ran out," says Lois Lang, a Canadien staying in Ardmore. "And they were fantastically priced up."
Governor Henry will propose re-importation of the drugs in next week's legislative session. Oklahomans favoring this plan say the cost of prescription drugs in the U.S. can be three or four times higher than in Canada. Pete Tenney, KTEN news.
