BURLINGTON, Vt. A federal judge is questioning whether the Bush administration is making the nation's drug supply less safe by refusing to approve drug importation programs like one proposed by Vermont.
U-S District Court Judge William Sessions raised that question yesterday in a hearing on Vermont's first-in-the-nation lawsuit over the drug re-importation issue.
A Justice Department lawyer said the government isn't ignoring the fact that millions of Americans already get American-made medicines from other countries, where they often sell for far less than in the U-S.
Vermont's suit is over the Food and Drug Administration's refusal to approve a program allowing state workers, retirees and their families to buy cheaper drugs from Canada and other countries.
