Is Legalizing the purchase of prescription drugs from Canada the Answer?

Online Drug Prescriptions

That's why the State Pharmacy Board is filing a lawsuit against several on-line drug companies.

Buying medication on the web without a doctor's prescription may seem like an easy way to get your drugs. But you're putting yourself at risk of mixing the wrong medications.

Nine on your side's Sherrie Evans has a warning from doctor's and pharmacy in tonight's Health Alert.

Lottie Rains says she'd rather buy her prescriptions in a pharmacy than on the internet.

"I think it's dangerous, I think your doctor needs to know what you're taking."

And the North Carolina Pharmacy Board agrees.

Pharmacy Board Executive Director, David Work, says "People on the other end of the transaction don't have your entire medical history, so they can't tell whether the drugs you're taking now might interact with the drugs they're providing."

Which is why they suggest, don't buy on-line.

Pharmacist Rob Williams says it can do you more harm than good if you take two things that's oppose each, it's a dangerous mix.

Sherrie: "For example, mixing Viagra with some blood pressure medications and heart medications can make you very sick."

Plus, Williams says some sites out there aren't even f-d-a approved and in many cases the drug you buy isn't what you think it is.

"If you're buying a pill over the internet you think is treating your blood sugar and it's a fraudulent drug and doesn't contain ingredients you need, you're not getting the benefit of what your doctor thinks you need."

Williams says it's best to have a pharmacist monitor drug interactions, so they know what you're taking...and it's this one on one time rains says she'll stick with.

Sherrie Evans Eyewitness News Nine, on your side.

Williams says many people think buying drugs on-line is cheaper than from a pharmacy.

He says that's not always the case. Meanwhile, the State Pharmacy Board says while there are some credible drug sites on line, many aren't authorized to sell drugs in our state.

They have already filed suits against many of those operations. However, most sites are run from out of the country and are hard to track down.

Bill to allow pharmacies to reimport drugs passes Senate

The Oklahoma Senate backs a drug reimportation plan that would permit state pharmacies to obtain U-S-made prescription drugs from Canada and elsewhere for sale here. The Federal Drug Administration has opposed drug reimportation bills, claiming they violate the Interstate Commerce Clause of the U-S Constitution. Those measures mainly deal with allowing individuals to obtain reimported drugs. Tulsa state Senator Tom Adelson says his legislation avoids that legal question because it would require pharmacies to sell reimported medicines only to Oklahomans in intrastate, not interstate, commerce. Most programs are geared to allowing individuals obtain such drugs by crossing the border into Canada or buying drugs online.

Democrats allege bad deal on drugs

Bay Area seniors are not saving significant money under Medicare's new prescription drug program, according to a report released Monday by most of the Bay Area's House Democrats. The report says Bay Area prices for 2004's 10 best-selling prescription drugs among seniors are 75 percent higher under the new Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit than under deals negotiated by the federal government at other agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs. Medicare Part D's prices also are 60 percent higher than those paid by consumers in Canada; almost 5 percent higher than prices on Drugstore.com; and almost 2 percent higher than prices at Costco, the report found. But Republicans who shepherded the bill through Congress rejected a proposal to let Medicare negotiate with drug companies for lower prices. The report proves "what we've been saying since the debate on the Republican Medicare drug bill began," said Rep. Pete Stark, D-Fremont, in a news release. "If you create a privatized drug benefit and refuse to let the government negotiate lower prices, senior citizens and people with disabilities will pay the price," said Stark, who as ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee's Health Subcommittee is particularly outspoken on the issue. "Instead of attempting to set Medicare on the road to privatization, Republicans in Congress should have worked with Democrats to establish a real prescription benefit within Medicare."
